jnlp files with jre-openjdk
I cannot open any file with jre-openjdk. which is the procedure to run such apps?
Its a web application that runs perfectly both one windows and on OSX.

Re: jnlp files with jre-openjdk
Your description is fairly vague. What happens exactly when you try to open a java application? Preferably try to open it via cli (for some debug output).

Re: jnlp files with jre-openjdk
You need icedtea java web stuff, not just the jre.

Re: jnlp files with jre-openjdk
And once installed, how to run them? Because the behaviour is still the same as before when i attempt to open those files.
Thank you

Re: jnlp files with jre-openjdk
Just opening the jnlp file with icedtea should be enough to get it running, but you will need to be online as jnlp just downloads a jar and executes it.

Certainly. You make a very valid question.
In the Linux world, Java (as the open source project) is called «OpenJDK». But if you install OpenJDK alone, you don’ t get the «Plug-in» (the component needed to run applets inside a web browser AND Java Web Start apps). You need «IcedTea» which is the name given to the Java Plug-in that goes along with OpenJDK.
Why they choose to confuse the user with two different package names is beyond me (actually, I know why, it has to do with the project history, but that’ s of no interest to end users). If you ask me, Icedtea should be renamed to «OpenJDK-plugin». But that is besides the point.
1. A functioning JRE installed (OpenJDK)
2. A functioning Java plug-in (IcedTea) installed,
The Icedtea installation has NOT configured Icedtea as a browser «helper app» to appropiately launch JNLP files.
So how do you fix it. Simple: 😉
. the Java app will launch.
And from that point on, all Java Web Start apps will run when you click on the launcher link. (again, the first time you run any given app you’ ll have to authorize it, but not from that point onwards if the crypto signature is maintained).
Does this need to be so irritatingly complex? of course not.
The problem is that the Icedtea developers think about things like developers, not end users. 🙁
I hope I have been of help. And to the rest of the people who replied. try to be more understanding of end users’ needs, please. 🙂
*I say this with a grin on my face, please nobody get offended*

If I try to open the file in firefox, I get:
/home/obriem5/Desktop/rpischeduler.jnlp could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred.
Try saving to disk first and then opening the file.
However, it is saved to my desktop already. From that path, choosing to open with firefox redirects me to the website where I downloaded it, with the option to open or save to disk.
I would right-click some JNLP file, select «Open With», and select open with sun java 6 web start.
If I try doing that, it does absolutely nothing.
For future reference to anyone reading this:
OpenJDK is a future replacement for Java. Currently, Ubuntu and Mac OS X use this instead of the official Oracle Java. Some things do not work entirely yet and may cause problems, but it does get closer with every release. If this is the case for you, simply replace OpenJDK with Java.
On Ubuntu, you will likely want to use Oracle Java instead of OpenJDK. You can do this by enabling the Partner Repository in the Ubuntu Software Centre’s Software Sources menu. Do a search for Java and install sun-java6-jre and all should be well.
**Note that you do not need to totally remove OpenJDK. You can have both installed at once with no problems. Some people report having better performance on Minecraft using OpenJDK instead of Java, for example. So if you don’t mind taking up some extra space, there’s no problem if you do not remove it.

(Windows, Mac OS, Linux).
3. MacOS:

Ubuntu

Working with Java Web Start (.jnlp) in Firefox/OpenSUSE, and Linux in general
So after a good long time not being able to play this Facebook game we’re building for P2P-related research, which runs on Java Web Start, I finally got pissed today and sat down and finally got to the bottom of it.
Because Java isn’t free technology and all that, OpenSUSE actually comes preinstalled with OpenJDK instead of the common version of Java distributed by Sun. With this default configuration, Web Start (JNLP) files on the internet will open by default in an open implementation of Java Web Start called ‘IcedTea Web Start’, which I hear works reasonably well – but outright doesn’t work for some cases, like mine.
For people who, like me, need to run Sun’s version of Web Start from Firefox – first, you need to grab and install Sun’s version of the Java runtime using your software package manager (in OpenSUSE the package is called java-1_6_0-sun ). Verify that you have a program called ‘javaws’ after this step. You can simply type ‘javaws’ into an open terminal and make sure it is recognized as Java(TM) Web Start.
Okay, next all we need to do is get Firefox to use javaws when opening JNLP files. For other distros you’d go to Edit > Preferences > Applications in Firefox, look for JNLP, and change the setting so it uses javaws. On OpenSUSE, Firefox is integrated so it takes its file-association settings directly from KDE. So you’ll have to instead go to KDE’s systemsettings (Configure Desktop) > Advanced Tab > File Associations. Here, run a search for JNLP, then add ‘/usr/bin/javaws’ to the top of the Application Preference Order.
We’re done! Next time you open a JNLP Web Start file in Firefox, it should offer to use Sun’s Java Web Start to open it 🙂
