“What would you do if you saw a crocodile?”
“What would you buy if you had 1 million dollars?”
“Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world?”
Dice roller.
What do schoolchildren like
and dislike about learning English
It is common knowledge that every day distances between different countries seem less and, of course, it is becoming more important to know different languages. In fact, one billion people speak English today, 400 million people speak English as their first language and for the other 600 million people it is either a second language or a foreign language. English is the first language in the UK, The USA, Australia and New Zealand. It is one of the official languages in Canada, the Irish Republic and the Republic of South Africa. It is spoken in more than 60 countries and it is used by the government, businessmen and universities. English is the language of politics and diplomacy, science and technology, business, trade, sport and pop music. To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. But it is not easy to learn English and it is a long, slow and difficult process that takes a lot of time. English is taught throughout the world and a lot of people speak it quite well. In our country English is very popular, it is studied at schools, even at nursery schools, colleges and universities.
To begin with, English has become an important subject in all secondary schools. Pupils begin learning English at the age of seven and junior pupils enjoy singing songs, playing games and reciting poems in English. In the course of time school program is becoming more difficult. In fact, when pupils get ready for the state exam they face some difficulties. One of them is lack of lexis which is necessary to use when pupils pass oral tests. While comparing two pictures, they have to express their own opinion on some topics, for example task 4 page 225 (M.V. Verbitskaya State Exam-2017). Another problem is to write a personal letter and answer required questions using good English. It means that they should use necessary lexis on certain topics which the letter offers. Moreover, writing an essay is also a problem for many students as they, have to express arguments for and against on certain topics using special lexis. As a result, if a teacher uses additional lexis and grammar patterns, he can help pupils in three possible ways.
Firstly, State Exam-2017 offers the following letter «At school we are doing projects on the world capitals. If I choose Moscow, what places of interest should I write about? Is it popular among foreign and local tourists, why? What season is it better to visit Moscow»? So, while using additional lexis it is possible to teach pupils write the following: «In your letter you ask me about Moscow. I strongly believe, Moscow is a unique city famous for its long history, culture and architecture and, of course, our capital is worth visiting. Guess why?
You know, its landmarks such as Red Square, the Kremlin, the Tretyakov Gallery and Bolshoi Theatre attract crowds of tourist and produce great impression both on the young and the old. In addition, tourists can relax in a café and the atmosphere is warm and friendly in many of them. The food is delicious, the service is excellent and the locals are quite friendly. In is interesting to note that tourists can do a lot of other activities, such as going sightseeing, shop for souvenirs, take photographs and try local food».
Secondly, State Exam-2017 offers the following tips on page 225 (Task 4)
1. Say which type of housing you would prefer.
In this case pupils can use additional lexis and say: « In the hectic world of today our life style is active and exciting, but often rather tiring». So, we need rest and relaxation after a hard working day. I strongly believe living in your own house in the countryside helps us relax and reduce stress thanks to peaceful atmosphere, lack of traffic jams, fresh air and beautiful nature».
Finally, additional lexis and phrases make an essay more expressive. For instance, State Exam-2017 offers to comment on the following statement (p.135). The most important thing in life is a family. It is possible to use the following expressions: I cannot imagine my life without a good family, have much in common, get on well, are on friendly terms, turn for advice, are ready to support each other in a difficult situation, help to solve problems, devote much time to, follow my parentꞌs example, set a good example for, try to keep and follow family traditions. In fact, they help pupils to write an interesting and logical essay.
To conclude, a teacher has a chance to enrich the list of expressions and patterns gradually and use them at the lessons when they speak on different topics, make up dialogues or write letters, articles and essays. There is no doubt, that this kind of work helps pupils come in contact with foreigners, practice good English while travelling and enrich their vocabulary.
Yet, senior pupils are aware of the importance of good knowledge of English as brilliant skills help pupils make a good career. At English lessons they practice in reading, writing, speaking, doing grammar exercises and listening. As a result, they can understand foreign speech, listen to songs in English, watch films and communicate with people all over the world with the help of the Internet or while travelling.
At the same time, learning English demands patience, attention, interest persistence and regular work.
However, not all pupils are able to be attentive at the lessons, understand grammar rules, remember lexis and do homework regularly.
Besides, some of them are not good at spelling, reading, listening comprehension and writing tests. As a result, they have troubles at school and at home and they become indifferent to learning English. Moreover, pupilsꞌ interest in learning English much depends on teacher ꞌs skills, qualification, intelligence and ability to use modern equipment that makes lessons more interesting, educati о nal and understandable.
Firstly, knowing a language opens doors for visiting different countries and it gives an opportunity to communicate, to understand and to be understood by people. Furthermore, it develops our mind and broadens our imagination. For example, while travelling people learn more about different cultures, lifestyles, customs and traditions of other nations. Finally, good knowledge of a foreign language plays a big role in making a career not only at home, but also abroad.
Nevertheless, there are people who don ꞌt understand the importance of knowing, speaking and using a foreign language nowadays. Some of them claim that there is no point in concentrating their attention on learning English and they prefer to learn other subjects. Besides, studying a foreign language is really hard work and so it is fair to be awarded for pupilsꞌ efforts. However, a lot of teachers donꞌ t praise students for their work and pupils have no motivation for studying the language.
I completely disagree with the above opinion I consider it normal to expect pupils
be interested in studying English. Thanks to rapid progress of science and technology, English can be widely used everywhere: in politics, economy, art, sports, IT, trade and, of course, for entertainment.
Taking everything into consideration, there are two points of view on learning English. To my way of thinking, English gives endless prospects for all educated people.

YUNTOLOVSKIY WILDLIFE PRESERVE
We would like to tell you about this park. The Yuntolovskiy Wildlife Preserve is located in the Primorskiy District of St-Petersburg to the North of the old village Lahti. It is an interesting fact that there are three interconnected ecosystems here: the Lahti`s Flood, a number of marsh which are united in Lahti’s swamp and the low forest with wetland pine forest. Furthermore, it is the largest area near the city territory in Europe. This is the only place where a rare shrub wax-myrtle successfully grows.
On the whole, 150 kinds of birds are migrating, 13 of them are recorded into the Red Books of different countries and regions.
It is an all-round park, which is located on the sea coast of the Gulf of Finland near Komarovo. This park was created to keep taiga woods and seaside w е tlands.
Firstly, this place is famous for its large amount of fir trees.
Thirdly, you can see a lot of anthill of red forest ant here. And among different ecological groups of animals there are many kinds of old age fir trees which are recoded into the Red Book of Leningradskaya Region.

GLADYSHEVSKIY WILDLIFE PRESERV
I am very glad to see you in our nature park. It is located not far from the village Roschino. 1/9 part of this area is situated on St-Petersburg’s territory and 8/9 belongs to Leningradskay Region. The water system consists of Lake Gladyshevskoe, the River Gladyshevka and the River Black.
Our park is an all-round and was created to keep spawing salmon fish. You can meet an European pearl on the bank of the lake. In addition, there is a singal place of their inhabitant on the Karelian Isthmus. Can you imagine what our life will be like without forests. Trees produce oxygen, which is one of our most basic needs.
Of course, you can see coniferous woods: pine and fir trees. In conclusion, there are 25 kinds of freshwater fish and a lamprey.
The Dudergofskye Heights are located 20 km southwest of St-Peterburg.
In fact, this area includes two large hills: Crow and Nut Mounts. You can see the springs which are rich calcium, magnesium and minerals.
Among the grasses you can meet a lungwort, different kinds of violet and rare kinds of plants. Many kinds of plants were planted here, such as: a fir tree, a larch, a beach and a hornbeam. There are a lot of rare kinds of mosses, mushrooms and lichens. We hope, that you will able to visit this wonderful place! Welcome!
And finally, what do you think about singing the song «Mr. President» composed by famous Russian composer Igor Krutoy. By the way a talented singer Lara Fabian from Belgium wrote the words to it. The main idea of this song is saving our beautiful planet.
Let’s try to make a plan
To save a children’s Earth
How can we change our minds
And stop this madness?
Today is our last chance
To keep a planet safe
will not follow us to the grave
How will you save your loved ones from this now?
Tell me now «Yes, we can»
How will you make your mother proud and safe
changing the history?
Music is all I have
To ride and hold you charmed
Will you hear every note
I say to your heart?
Tell me how can we help
To make a better day?
You know I just cannot help
Believing in what you say
How will you save your loved ones from this now?
Tell me now «Yes, we can»
How will you make your mother proud and safe
changing the history?
The situation is serious
Everywhere around the planet
We need to raise all voices
We need to change all minds
Winters are getting longer
It’s not for me or you
It’s for all children, our children.
How will you save your loved ones from this now?
Tell me now «Yes, we can»
How will you make your mother proud and safe?
The author: Lara Fabian
Teacher: To sum up our discussion we come to a conclusion that our planet is our mutual home. But it is in great danger now and the duty of all people is to take care of it and to save in.
All pupils have a chance to take part in them and demonstrate their talent, abilities and intellect.
At the same pupils have more motivation for learning English.
In fact, studentsꞌ exchange is of great importance for those pupils who are ready to improve their knowledge of English and have good practice of it. Besides, studying abroad is becoming more and more popular these days. With more countries entering the European Union and choosing to study abroad. To my mind, continuing or completing your education in a foreign country has a number of distinct advantages.
However, some people believe it is better to study in your own country. They think that students who study abroad spend most of their time travelling and having fun while those who stay in their own country study harder and learn more.
To start with, it can help you develop new skills and a cross-cultural understanding. For one thing, learning abroad and living another way of life opens your mind to different points of view. Also, you can improve your language skills by studying abroad even more, if you study in the local language. Secondly, you will have lots of new experiences. Most of them will be exciting and interesting, and will benefit you by making you stronger.
It is a well-known fact, that there are a lot of courses designed for Russian specialized language schools. They follow the Russian Standard of Education and aims to introduce the students to the English language. Young students like to learn «Starlight» course. Young learners will be captivated by the adventures of Woody and Frosty as they enter the Magic Forest and meet Erlina, Willow and Alvin. Through an array of activities such as stories, songs, games, sticker activities and craftwork, the students will be introduced to theme-oriented vocabulary and some simple structures. In this way, students will find the learning process enjoyable as they embark on their journey to discover the English language. The Student ꞌs Book has been designed to appeal to, as well as involve, the students in language learning. New language is presented in a clear and effective way by means of lively dialogues, songs, games and listening activities. All modules contain interesting and captivating topics for young learners, reinforced by meaningful activities, which encourage children to think and speak in English. Each page promotes active participation and interaction on their part, as well as the development of their receptive and productive skills. The Our School section presents the new language with cross-curricular material. The students use English to complete the tasks related to other subject areas, such as Art, Maths, Health and Safety. This reinforces their language learning and promotes learner independence and peer cooperation. Students consolidate the language learn in simple, yet meaningful and appealing dialogues. The Go Green section gives students the opportunity to learn about the environment in a fun and creative way. Grammatical Focuses on the grammatical structures presented in the module. It begins with the presentation of the theory followed by a variety of exercises. The longer Grammar Land sections may be divided and taught in separate sessions. The students further consolidate the language learnt in the module through exercises in the World Lab section. The students are familiarized with culture and ways of the life in other countries, as well as explore their own, through the Our World section. Storyland presents in narrative form with lively songs to provide maximum enjoyment and it aims to get the young learners acquainted with Russian folklore. The story recycles key language while introducing new language items to develop the studentsꞌ comprehension skills. The phonics section helps the students distinguish between different sounds in spoken English as well as help the students start reading. It is accompanied by humorous illustrations, adding fun to the activity while improving pronunciation and intonation. And, of course, the students have the opportunity to recycle and consolidate the language of each module through the checkpoint section. Workbooks are full colour and contains fun activities, which consolidate the language taught in each module and students can be used either in class or for homework.
My Junior Language Portfolio is used to keep material that the students collect and use, along with any extra material given by the teacher throughout the course. My Junior Language Portfolio has been designed to stimulate and support the learning of the English language. Its purpose is to help the students reflect on, realise their progress in and improve their language learning. It is a tool to accompany the studentsꞌ language learning throughout their school life and is suitable for documenting their leaning both inside and outside the classroom. Students like to do project works, сollect objects and pictures, make up stories or performances of songs, school plays. In fact, it is a collection of material that the learners want to keep as evidence of their learning. And the main emphasis is on the process of learning and as a result, students learn how to work independently. From the first lesson students should bring in a dossier, which they will have with them at all times and in which they will keep their Junior Language Portfolio. For the next lesson, they should bring in self-adhesive labels, write My Junior Language Portfolio on them and help your learners stick them onto their dossiers. As a result, students demonstrate how to store their material in their Junior Language Portfolios and learn how to work independently.
To sum up, English is an important part of education nowadays. It gives school children perfect prospects in their future life.
It should be compulsory for all schoolchildren to learn a foreign language
In todays, fast-developing world education is an essential part of our life and good knowledge of a foreign language is also necessary for a successful future of a person. At the same time some people state that learning a foreign language is not so important. I personally believe, that knowing a foreign languages helpful in all spheres of life.
